Thanks for the link! Yes, apparently that is what Puccini said (or mumbled to himself) when Caruso auditioned. Not sure he addressed Caruso directly when he said it (I rather think not) - he didn't know Caruso at that time.

I think the story is true, because I remember having read it elsewhere too. No, Caruso was not famous at that time and thence Puccini’s surprise. As to whether he told the exact phrase or not, it is not so important, is it?
